What is internet marketing?
Simply put, internet marketing is the use of various internet advertising methods to achieve a desired result. These advertising methods include, but are not limited to:

Search Engine marketing
Search engines, miraculous as they are, are very limited. They can only form basic associations and are incapable of determining the meaning or intent of any given search. For instance, someone searching for a "local wedding band" to perform at a wedding ceremony will undoubtedly find search results that feature local jewelry stores. While our searcher will probably find their desired results, (perhaps next trying "local wedding musicians"), the inability of a search engine to make distinctions like our example represents an opportunity. The process is known as Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and it includes optimizing the content of a website to increase the likelihood that a search engine will associate that website with a particular keyword or search query. Additionally, SEO also includes increasing the popularity of a website thru link building and directory submission. SEO results in improved organic (organic meaning non-paid) search engine rankings and results, meaning more website traffic that is targeted to specific terms.
Search Engine Marketing also includes pay-per-click advertising. Because the number of websites that are listed organically for a given term is limited, search engines offer the opportunity to pay for listings associated with a particular keyword or search query. Unfortunately, competition is very fierce in the paid search listing marketplace. A poorly designed and/or poorly managed paid search campaign will result in great expense with limited results. Banner advertising, once a very effective method of internet advertising, has decreased in effectiveness over the past two years. Consumers, becoming ever more sophisticated, have begun to sub-consciously block out most banner ads (known as banner blindness) because of their prevalence on most mainstream websites. While banner ads still do offer decent results, they need to require interaction and be highly targeted to be effective. PPC (pay-per-click) advertising, like banner advertising, has seen a drop in effectiveness over the last few years. While PPC can still offer some benefits, it is mostly an outdated marketing model.
